The Citadel
Dead silence answered Ridmarkâs pronouncement.
Ardrhythain said nothing, his expression calm. Morignaâs eyes had gone wide in her elven face. Calliande looked disturbed, as did Tarmyntir and Madelgarda. Andorion nodded in approval, no doubt looking forward to the fight.
âThatâ¦that is madness,â said Morigna, finding her voice at last.
âIs it?â said Ridmark. âYou were at Urd Morlemoch.â He looked at Calliande. âYou both were. You saw the duel between Ardrhythain and the Warden. They were evenly matched.â
âI donât know,â said Calliande. âWith all respect to Ardrhythain, I wasnât sure who was winning.â
âNeither of us was,â said Ardrhythain, âuntil your power distracted the Warden, and I was able to gain the edge."
âThat fight destroyed a large portion of the Torn Hills,â said Morigna. âUrd Morlemoch now sits in a lake of molten stone. And that was only in a battle that lasted moments. What would happen in a duel to the death between two wizards of such power? All of Andomhaim might sink into the sea or the sky itself would burn.â
âBut we have advantages,â said Ridmark. He lifted the sheathed Caledhmaer. âThe Sword of the Dragon Knight.â
âAnd a Dragontiarna Knight of the Empire,â announced Andorion.
âIndeed,â said Ridmark, though he doubted that even Andorionâs skill and fury would make a difference in such a fight. âAnd the Wardenâs power may well be limited. He is channeling his magic to the dark soulblades, and theyâre all in the world of the Malison now. Such a feat of power would strain even his strength.â Ridmark took a deep breath. âIf I open a gate to Urd Morlemoch, and we strike at the Warden with overwhelming force, perhaps we can finally end this war. If the Warden is destroyed, the dark soulblades will still be dangerous, but the Heralds wonât be nearly as powerful.â He turned to Ardrhythain. âAm I wrong?â
âNo,â said Ardrhythain. âYour reasoning is correct. For the Warden to project his power into the dark soulblades would take considerable strength. For him to project that strength to another world entirely would be an order of magnitude more difficult. He will be weakened, yes, compared to his usual power.â
âWeakened enough that we could overcome him?â said Ridmark.
âI do not know,â said Ardrhythain.
âBut the Warden is invincible within Urd Morlemoch,â said Calliande. âHe canât leave, but neither can he be defeated.â
âBut he did leave, briefly, the last time we were there,â said Ridmark. âHe put his spirit into your body and almost opened a world gate to Old Earth. When he stepped outside of Urd Morlemoch in your body, he left a considerable portion of his magic behind. We were able to overcome him, rescue you, and run until Ardrhythain found us.â
âRidmark is correct,â said Morigna. âPerhaps the door opens both ways. Previously, the Warden left the majority of his power in Urd Morlemoch and left with his spirit in your body. Perhaps now the majority of his power is within the dark soulblades while he remains in Urd Morlemoch.â
âIâ¦hadnât thought of that,â said Calliande. âIt is possible.
