The Citadel

Dead silence answered Ridmark’s pronouncement.

Ardrhythain said nothing, his expression calm. Morigna’s eyes had gone wide in her elven face. Calliande looked disturbed, as did Tarmyntir and Madelgarda. Andorion nodded in approval, no doubt looking forward to the fight.

“That…that is madness,” said Morigna, finding her voice at last.

“Is it?” said Ridmark. “You were at Urd Morlemoch.” He looked at Calliande. “You both were. You saw the duel between Ardrhythain and the Warden. They were evenly matched.”

“I don’t know,” said Calliande. “With all respect to Ardrhythain, I wasn’t sure who was winning.”

“Neither of us was,” said Ardrhythain, “until your power distracted the Warden, and I was able to gain the edge."

“That fight destroyed a large portion of the Torn Hills,” said Morigna. “Urd Morlemoch now sits in a lake of molten stone. And that was only in a battle that lasted moments. What would happen in a duel to the death between two wizards of such power? All of Andomhaim might sink into the sea or the sky itself would burn.”

“But we have advantages,” said Ridmark. He lifted the sheathed Caledhmaer. “The Sword of the Dragon Knight.”

“And a Dragontiarna Knight of the Empire,” announced Andorion.

“Indeed,” said Ridmark, though he doubted that even Andorion’s skill and fury would make a difference in such a fight. “And the Warden’s power may well be limited. He is channeling his magic to the dark soulblades, and they’re all in the world of the Malison now. Such a feat of power would strain even his strength.” Ridmark took a deep breath. “If I open a gate to Urd Morlemoch, and we strike at the Warden with overwhelming force, perhaps we can finally end this war. If the Warden is destroyed, the dark soulblades will still be dangerous, but the Heralds won’t be nearly as powerful.” He turned to Ardrhythain. “Am I wrong?”

“No,” said Ardrhythain. “Your reasoning is correct. For the Warden to project his power into the dark soulblades would take considerable strength. For him to project that strength to another world entirely would be an order of magnitude more difficult. He will be weakened, yes, compared to his usual power.”

“Weakened enough that we could overcome him?” said Ridmark.

“I do not know,” said Ardrhythain.

“But the Warden is invincible within Urd Morlemoch,” said Calliande. “He can’t leave, but neither can he be defeated.”

“But he did leave, briefly, the last time we were there,” said Ridmark. “He put his spirit into your body and almost opened a world gate to Old Earth. When he stepped outside of Urd Morlemoch in your body, he left a considerable portion of his magic behind. We were able to overcome him, rescue you, and run until Ardrhythain found us.”

“Ridmark is correct,” said Morigna. “Perhaps the door opens both ways. Previously, the Warden left the majority of his power in Urd Morlemoch and left with his spirit in your body. Perhaps now the majority of his power is within the dark soulblades while he remains in Urd Morlemoch.”

“I…hadn’t thought of that,” said Calliande. “It is possible.
